What is Rainwater Harvesting?

What is rainwater harvesting

Maintaining climatic conditions is very important to help the life support on the earth. Rain plays an important role in stabilizing the climatic conditions on earth. Water is the most important nutrients in earth as it helps transport oxygen, minerals and many more to develop cell in the lives of people, animals, or the trees and plants, rainwater supplement of it.

Rain is vital a part of the water cycle. The water cycle is that the method by that water on the surface heats up and evaporates, or changes to vapor condenses within the clouds and returns on the land of the earth as a variety of precipitation.

Rains overflow the picks up soil, fertilizer, oil, pesticides and alternative contaminants and push them into alternative areas of the landscape. These pollutants will increase algae growth in lakes, alter the habitat for fish, and even create lakes and oceans dangerous for recreational activities.

Conservation of rainwater is an excellent resource for the earth. Usage of rainwater there are different ways, out of that rainwater harvesting  is one of the most important:

Rainwater Harvesting Model:

The rainwater harvesting system is the technique of collection, filter, and storage of rainwater into natural reservoirs or tanks for its necessary usage like irrigation and many other purposes for the society of mankind.  The rainwater harvesting system methods are used the world over by many people to reduce the consumption of groundwater.

There are two important techniques for rainwater harvesting which are;-

  • For household use collect roof runoff
  • For use in the field or adjoining catchment to provide supplemental irrigation for agriculture.

Similarly, Catchment, Conveyance, Roof washing, Storage, Purification and Distribution are the six basic components for rainwater harvesting.

Other usages of rainwater

There are different uses related to our day to day practice with collected rainwater like:

  • Drinking and Cooking:

Rainwater is very pure as it doesn’t contain any chlorine or other chemicals unlike tap water therefore, rainwater is very high-quality water for human consumption

  • Bathing and Laundry Washing:

Consumption of water bathing and laundry washing is nearly one-fourth of our day-to-day usage of water. Therefore, the usage of municipal water can be reduced by the use of harvested rainwater.

  • Flushing Toilets:

Similarly, collected rainwater can be purposeful and reduces the usage of municipal water.

  • Watering Lawns, Gardens and Houseplants:

Rainwater is naturally designed water resourced by its storage in tanks and through an automatic irrigation system can be useful for watering lawns, gardens, or for plantation.

  • Composting:

For the proper decomposition of compost pile need of water is very essential. Harvested rainwater is very useful for this purpose.

  • Cleaning Vegetables:

Rainwater is very useful for cleaning vegetables straight from the garden, especially root vegetables.

  • Washing Vehicles and Equipment:

Another excellent use for rainwater is washing Cars, garden tools, lawnmowers, tractors, and even the driveway.

  • Water for Wildlife, Pets or Livestock:

Rainwater is also very safe for pets or livestock to drink or wash if it is recycled and kept clean.

  • Outdoor Ponds and Water Features

Rainwater can be collected, filtered for use in fountains or other water features with the pumping arrangement. Rainwater can also be filled in and reserved outdoor ponds and pools.

  • Fire Protection:

Rainwater can be very useful for fire protection by storage in a large tank. Only thing is the need for installation of a good pump so that it can be accessed the water quickly if needed.

We must not forget the usage of rainwater as water is precious and it is the source of energy. We must start the process of rainwater harvesting as soon as possible.
